The non-event on Keswick Island on 26 January 2021 turned out to be a peaceful family fun day when groups of individuals gathered on the beach at Basil Bay to enjoy the pristine surroundings whilst showing solidarity for Island locals. The weather gods were kind with clear blue skies, calm seas and not much wind - perfect in so many ways.
The atmosphere was friendly and cheerful, even though everyone there was aware of the issues currently dominating Keswick Island. It was, hopefully, a sign of what Keswick could be - a place for everyone to celebrate the natural beauty of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, the crystal clear water, white sandy beaches and warm weather.
I don’t think anyone privileged enough to be there would have called the day a ‘fizzer’ or wished the cheerful crowd to leave. The incredible media coverage has spread the message of the injustices on Keswick Island to even more people. The teams of reporters worked hard all day to bring the story to all Australians.
The issues associated with the island can hardly outweigh the gratitude that the residents on Keswick Island feel for the support of the Mackay and more distant public, for the fair media coverage of Keswick Island on Australia Day and for the committed interest that so many people from all walks of life have shown in our mission.
Thank you to everyone for your generosity and support. I think the message that we are going to hold on and continue our 'tug-of-war' is clearly out there. Our determination is our strength.
